Virginia Museum Rooftop & Garden Design

Where Landscape Becomes Part of the Collection

Vibrant seasonal plantings around a sculptural water feature in Williamsburg, VA

The Challenge

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond wanted its rooftop and garden spaces to mirror the artistry inside.

The existing landscape was functional but lacked the visual depth and seasonal interest expected at such a prestigious venue. The new design needed to complement the architecture, highlight the museum’s commitment to beauty, and offer a memorable year-round experience while withstanding heavy foot traffic and simplifying maintenance.

Our Approach

HomeTurf approached the project as both a landscape enhancement and an extension of the museum’s curated experience.

The design prioritized visual composition, seasonal variety, and structural elegance. Every planting choice and bedline was intentional—serving both aesthetic and functional purposes—to ensure the rooftop and garden areas remain vibrant, inviting, and easy to maintain.

What We Delivered

  • Elevated Rooftop Plantings

Custom planters featuring evergreens, ornamental grasses, and rotating seasonal color create a living gallery that changes throughout the year while maintaining structure and balance.

  • Sculpted Garden Beds

Refined bedlines, layered plantings, and integrated seating areas invite visitors to pause and enjoy the surroundings without detracting from the museum’s architecture.

  • Defined Walkways & Mulched Borders

Clean edges and fresh mulch provide a polished frame for each planting zone, guiding foot traffic naturally and enhancing the visual flow.

  • Preserved & Enhanced Sculptural Water Feature

Ongoing care for the museum’s signature water feature, keeping lily pads, water lilies, and surrounding aquatic plants healthy and vibrant. The reflective surface and bold red columns remain a striking focal point for visitors year-round.
